Apple relies on TSMC for A9 chips, Samsung Just a Back Up
Well battle of Apple and Samsung is well known in the smartphone market where both allegedly keeps targeting one another, but behind the scenes Apple is one of most important customer of Samsung making huge purchases like the chipset and flash memory.
Now Apple is switching to other vendors to fulfill their need and have less reliance on Samsung with grown emphasis on sourcing the most important part of smartphone from other competitors, in this case TSMC which has in the past delivered most of A8 and A8X chipset used in current generation iPhone’s and iPad’s.
Apple next generation devices will feature new A9 chipset built by 14nm process and TSMC is apparently more than ready to supply majority of Apple demand efficiently on time. Even Samsung will also be part of Apple next gen iPhone as TSMC cannot provide just 100% of Apple needs and hence Samsung will also be part of it but on a smaller scale than before.
It remains to be seen whether Apple goes for an incremental update these season with introduction of iPhone 6S and 6S Plus or going to up the game and launch a major upgrade with iPhone 7. Whatever Apple does it is bound to make Apple money and move out of shelves in millions.
